Origins

Origins of THCRC

THCRC was formed partly to satisfy the strategy of the local authority who were determined that a third sector commissioning strategy (working in partnership with local community groups) is the best way forward for meeting the recycling needs of a borough rich in high-rise flats. A number of organisations came together, including the Tower Hamlets Environmental Trust, the London Recycling Consortium and Islington Waste Savers, all of whom have experience of community recycling going back a few years. The management team is strongly supported by experienced people from East London Community Recycling Partnership, L.RC and Recycling Works Haringey. THCRC is a member of London Community Recycling Network and the National Community Recycling Network.

How do we support ourselves

We bid for local authority contracts in recycling and try and win contracts. For example in Tower Hamlets we have a five-year contract with the local authority (extendable by another two years) to carry out recycling from 70,000 high-rise dwellings.
