What is unique about what we do?
We are involved in the first large scale door to door recycling activity-involving hundreds of thousands of residents and tens of thousands of households who live in high-rise flats. This in itself is unique. To do this successfully we have designed a special high rise-recycling vehicle.
We also believe that up to 80% of the waste from the household bin could be recycled. And we are determined to try and tackle as much of this as possible. To do this effectively we work in partnership with the local authority that are also committed to work with the local community and with community groups like us.
We strongly believe that there should be a direct link between the refuse that people who live in tower hamlets generate, that then becomes transformed into a resource for industry through the efforts of residents, and the local economy. We believe as many local people as possible should get jobs and other benefits in the industry. We are committed to a policy of reflecting the composition of the residents through our employment policy.
How can you participate in recycling in tower hamlets?
You could take part in a network of residents who work as volunteers. In each block of housing with 50 or more residents we intend to set up a friends network of two or more volunteers who can encourage their friends and neighbours to recycle, who can make suggestions to us on how to improve the scheme and help us correct mistakes that we make, and become a contact with our recycling staff if they want to do so. There is a special section of the web site called the Tower Hamlets Friends of Recycling Network and you will find details on how to join and what is involved in it.
What materials do we currently collect?
We currently collect 13 types of materials from the doorstep using the green box system. These include Clear, brown and Green glass bottles and jars; Newspapers, Junk Mail and magazines, books, yellow pages and telephone directories, catalogues, aluminium and steel cans, tin foil, textiles and pairs of shoes, shredded card board in flat packs, cards and cereal boxes in flat packs, batteries, and coloured and white household paper
In the very near future we intend to collect other materials such as plastics (bottles and containers made from PET, HDPE and PVC labelled commonly as 1,2 and 3), food waste and green waste and bulky goods.
Green Box Requests & Missed Collections
From Mid September you can request a green box if your building is a part of the green box scheme.
If our operators miss your green box (and you have left it out in the hall way before or by 8.00AM on the date of collection) you can phone the council customer care hotline. We will rectify the problem within 24 hours for the missed collection and within three working days for a box request.
Your regular day of collection
We will post on the web site a list of buildings and blocks of houses that we will be servicing each day of the week when the service is fully operational and you will be able to check if the name of your block is on the list and the day that it will be serviced by one of our teams.
