Welcome to THCRC

THCRC is a local community recycling company in Tower hamlets that is not for profit. Its aims include increasing the level of recycling from households and other sectors by ensuring that, as much of the household waste can be recycled as possible. This includes the normally recycled items such as glass cans and newspapers but other more difficult items such as cardboard, plastics, food waste, textiles, shoes, telephone directories etc and eventually white goods, furniture, computers and other electronic goods.

This will, not happen over night but we will make a good start with the standard items plus cardboard. We see ourselves as a company driven by environmental concern and care. We therefore want more recycling to happen and this can only happen if it is made cheaper and more competitive with refuse collection costs. This again cannot happen unless innovation takes place. We do a lot of innovation. For example we have designed and manufactured the dedicated high rise door to door recycling vehicle that can go up lifts and do door step sorting of recycled materials. We have designed the recycling winch for removing bulk bags for recycled items such as bottles and paper from high rise flats with out lifts. We believe in keeping costs down. So we have a policy that no one in the organisation should be paid more than twice the lowest paid person. This compares favourably with companies in the city of London where the wage differential within a company could be as high as twenty times. This in turn enables us to pass some of the benefits of recycling directly to the people who do the actual recycling in the first place in the form of weekly prizes and volunteering allowances.

We also believe in creating jobs for local people in the recycling industry and in training people to acquire new skills in the sector. As a first step we have created 30 jobs in the sector in the first three months.
